If you, like many sellers, are still living in your home while it’s on the market it’s time for some tidying. This goes beyond the painting, repairs, maintenance, and lawn and garden care required to ensure your home is move-in ready. Unlike friends and family who visit, buyers will be looking in cupboards and closets and touring every room to determine if it can meet their needs. This means tidying is a must.
The Marie Kondo Method
Marie Kondo specializes in the Japanese KonMari method of downsizing and organization. Her method is perfect for sellers for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, her method does more than just clear the clutter but makes closets, garages and every area of the home look buyer-friendly. Secondly, her method helps sellers to downsize before they move, and kickstarts packing the non-essentials.
A Storage Space May Be Required
As you pack away things that you won’t need in the next few months, be sure to properly label each box with what is inside and the area of the home it belongs in. Also, since your pre-packed boxes may not be opened for several months consider placing a sheet of paper on top of the box detailing a bit about what is inside. For example, the outside of the box may be labeled “sports equipment” and the sheet at the top of the box might say baseball gloves, roller blades, and life jackets. Boxes take up a lot of room so renting a storage space may be necessary.
You will need to depersonalize your home a bit to make it easier for buyers to see themselves in your space, instead of seeing you in your space. Your Jerry Sardone real estate guide will help you to determine what should stay and what should go. For small items that you want to keep around, keep a designated storage box or plastic bin that you can quickly place items in before you show your home.
